My experience:
I'm Rebecca, a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist with over 15 years of NHS experience specialising in neurological conditions and facial palsy rehabilitation.
I graduated from the University of Sydney, Australia, with a Bachelor of Science (Speech Pathology) in 2010. I began my career working in paediatrics before moving into adult neurological rehabilitation, where I found my passion for supporting people with complex communication and swallowing diffculties and facial palsy. I continue to work with both adults and children in my independent practice.
I worked at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery for 8 years where developed my skills in the assessment and treatment of people with complex swallowing (dysphagia) and communication disorders caused by neurological, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative conditions.
My passions and skills:
My particular passion is helping people continue to eat, drink and communicate safely and confidently. I understand how much these abilities contribute to independence, relationships and quality of life, and I aim to provide practical, evidence-based therapy tailored to each person's individual goals.
I have over 10 years' experience supporting people with facial palsy and have completed advanced postgraduate training in facial neuromuscular rehabilitation. I have been fortunate to learn from leading extended scope practitioners in this specialist area. I work with people who have facial weakness caused by viral infections, surgery and peripheral nerve disorders, and I also provide specialist rehabilitation following facial reanimation surgery. I am also a quality botulinum toxin injector to treat and manage synkinesis.
Clients I work with:
I regularly work with people living with motor neurone disease (MND), muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease and Parkinson-plus syndromes, ataxia, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), multiple sclerosis (MS), functional neurological disorder (FND), mitochondrial disorders, Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS), and other peripheral nerve conditions. I have advanced clinical skills in motor speech disorders, differential diagnosis and facial neuromuscular rehabilitation.
Research:
Alongside my clinical work, I am passionate about research, education and improving care for people living with neurological conditions. In 2024, I completed a Master's degree in Clinical Research at City St George's, University of London. My research explored the lived experience of oral dysfunction following acquired facial weakness. I have published five peer-reviewed papers on facial palsy and ataxia and have been invited to present my work at national and international conferences.
Volunteer work:
Giving back to the facial palsy community is also incredibly important to me. I am a voluneer committee member for Facial Therapy Specialists International, a Patient Ambassador for Facial Palsy UK, and I chair the charity's London face-to-face support group.
